Steamed bread with Peppadews® & cheese
This bread is warm, soft and utterly fluffy! Enjoy it with braaied meat, or any meal where you plan to serve bread. Be creative with the seasonings – the options are endless! Caramelised onions will be delicious in this bread dough. Alternatively, add cooked bacon, cheese, sliced jalapeños, fresh herbs, olives, peppers, sundried tomatoes, spinach or feta, or any combination of these. This version is seasoned with some true South African flavours, by combining Peppadews® and cheese. It’s so good. Have a warm slice, straight from the pot, just with some butter … yum!
Hertzoggies (Jam & coconut tartlets)
This traditional South African sweet treat is actually very simple to make and ever so popular. Use my added twist and get creative by using different types of jams for the filling. A homemade pastry will be ideal, but I used a good-quality shop-bought short crust pastry and it works really well. Just follow the steps to blind bake the pastry cups first, for the best, flaky results.
Marbled chocolate malva pudding
This recipe uses a few not-so-typical ingredients for a malva pudding, but the end result is utterly delicious. You can decide whether you want to serve it with custard or vanilla ice cream. Make sure you have all the ingredients and spoil your family for the public holiday tomorrow.
Upside down fig & onion tart with thyme & goats’ cheese
This beautiful fig and onion tart is perfect for a special teatime occasion with a delicious balance between savoury and sweet – all in one tart. The pastry is made with cottage cheese and some butter, which makes it less finicky, so even if you have not made your own pastry before, then this recipe is perfect for you. I love to be creative with what’s in season and my taste buds have been craving something like this for the longest time. Yay, now I have another delicious recipe to make when figs are in season.
Easy mango dessert
My mom used to make this dessert for us when I was a child and I have such fond memories of it. Treat your family to this quick summer dessert while mangoes are in season or see which other summer fruit are ideal to try. Let me know once you’ve made it.
Frozen pink pomegranate dessert
Spoil a loved one or a group of friends with this super easy, yet impressive dessert. Everyone will think that you spent a lot of time in the kitchen. Turn shop-bought ice cream into gourmet treat with pomegranates as the hero ingredient and an interesting flavour twist with a bit of cinnamon.
The best salted caramel sauce
How does a salted caramel sauce sound? Mmm … what a treat! This recipe is an absolute taste sensation! Perfect for a dessert with fresh fruit or ice cream and more. And do have a look at the tip to substitute the salt for miso paste – it’s soooo good with that extra level of umami flavour.
Homemade focaccia with bacon, feta & pomegranate arils
Making this dough really doesn’t take a lot of effort, just a bit of planning. Allowing it to rise for 12-24 hours results in a delicious bubbly texture once baked. Baking it with bacon and feta on top and serving it with pomegranate rubies, rocket and a balsamic glaze takes this focaccia to a whole new level.
Baklava
Nuts, spices, honey, and crispy layers of phyllo pastry … mmm baklava! This famous Greek dessert is perfect for a special dessert or as part of a tea table. See the tips to either bake them as diamond shapes or even turn them into syrupy cigars.
Sweetcorn fritters
These are a delicious family treat that will have the kids begging for more. Any leftovers are ideal for lunch for the office or school the next day. Make small sweetcorn fritters to add to a snack platter when entertaining – they’re fabulous.
