Koesisters, the Cape Malay way

Koesisters, the Cape Malay way

For those who love the aroma of sweet spices, as much as I do, this is one of the best sweet treats you’ll ever eat. Although this is also a yeast-based dough, deep fried and then covered in a sweet syrup, the flavours are delicate and completely different to plaited koeksisters that most South African’s know and love so much. This is the perfect recipe to make as a family. Some can shape the dough, while others fry and roll – a fun and lekker activity.

Steamed bread with Peppadews® & cheese

Steamed bread with Peppadews® & cheese

This bread is warm, soft and utterly fluffy! Enjoy it with braaied meat, or any meal where you plan to serve bread. Be creative with the seasonings – the options are endless! Caramelised onions will be delicious in this bread dough. Alternatively, add cooked bacon, cheese, sliced jalapeños, fresh herbs, olives, peppers, sundried tomatoes, spinach or feta, or any combination of these. This version is seasoned with some true South African flavours, by combining Peppadews® and cheese. It’s so good. Have a warm slice, straight from the pot, just with some butter … yum!

Hertzoggies (Jam & coconut tartlets)

Hertzoggies (Jam & coconut tartlets)

This traditional South African sweet treat is actually very simple to make and ever so popular. Use my added twist and get creative by using different types of jams for the filling. A homemade pastry will be ideal, but I used a good-quality shop-bought short crust pastry and it works really well. Just follow the steps to blind bake the pastry cups first, for the best, flaky results.

Citrus salad with a minty vinaigrette

This simple combination of ingredients truly complements one another and is a beautiful synergy of flavours, colours and textures. The vibrant colours of this salad is enough to make your mouth water. Citrus paired with a minty vinaigrette is a refreshing combination, while the sweetness of the rubies gives it just the right balance of flavours. Enjoy this salad with any protein of your choice.
